With its airport route buses being only half full most of the time, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has planned a revamp of its services. This will not only improve the frequency of buses to the airport, but will also ensure that passengers do not have to wait for BIA services alone to get to the airport. To do this, the BMTC plans to make Mekhri Circle a ‘hub’ for airport buses.

The yet to be launched AirAsia India has decided to use the now closed Kamaraj Domestic Terminal in Chennai airport to set up its corporate office in the city. Airports Authority of India (AAI) Chairman VP Agrawal said the authority was ready to consider the airline’s request to use the now defunct building, but added it might have to vacate when AAI refurbished the old terminal to cater to extra traffic.

To develop a commercial project in Gurgaon realty firm CHD Developers will invest about Rs 150 crore, the company said on June 18. The company has recently acquired about 2 acres land on Dwarka Expressway for Rs 25 crore to develop the commercial project 'CHD Sky One' comprising one lakh sq ft area. The company has already got all the approvals to develop this land, it added.

French Ambassador to India Francois Richier has said that the nuclear reactors of French company Areva will go into production first in China before being supplied to Indian government's Jaitapur nuclear plant in Maharashtra. Areva will supply China two reactors that are under construction, he said. So that India will see how safe the reactors are when they work in China, he said to clear apprehensions on safety while speaking to members of the CII in Chennai last week.

Union Minister of New & Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah has said that the government will ensure that 75 per cent of 750 mw solar projects, to be offered under the second phase of Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, built with local content only. The government wants to encourage domestic industry also. The bidding would start in the coming month, said Farooq Abdullah.

CLP India, whch is considering a foray into the solar power sector, plans to invest about Rs 7,000 crore in India. CLP India is a subsidiary of power sector major CLP Holdings. Mahesh Makhija, Director (business development, renewables, CLP India said that the company is looking at adding about 1,000 mw. One-mw capacity would require an investment of Rs 6-6.5 crore.

Reeling under eight-hour power cuts through April and May, people in Madurai city in Tamil Nadu have reason to rejoice now as there is a boost to wind energy in the state. The southwest monsoon has brought in its wake strong wind, facilitating higher production of wind energy, said an official from the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation in Madurai.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah on June 12 inaugurated Solairedirect Energy’s first project in India — a 5.6 mw solar park under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM). Solairedirect Energy is a unit of Paris-based Solairedirect Group. The solar park, located near Phalodi in Rajasthan, was commissioned on February 24, 2013, in accordance with the schedules agreed with the Indian authorities and will generate 9,000 megawatt hours (mwh) per annum, enough to power 20,000 Indian households.

Following the green signal from the National Green Tribunal's expert panel the Sterlite Copper Smelter unit in Tuticorin of Tamil Nadu has resumed operations. The unit was shut down over two months ago, officials concerned said on June 17. The panel members conducted its second phase of inspection on June 16 and checked if the pollution monitoring equipment at the unit was working properly.

The recent surplus rainfall in Kerala has brightened the State's energy outlook. The state relies heavily on hydro-electrical projects for its power needs. The monsoon this season not only set in over Kerala promptly on June 1 but also brought excess rainfall of 41 per cent since then, according to Indian Met Department here. The rainfall in the first five days of the monsoon onset had been heavy with the state getting 149.33 mm against the normal amount of 77.93 mm.

Charu Illam is being run by MMLC, a women’s organisation, in T Nagar. Chairperson of MMLC-70 Cr Kajal Chhabria said that solar energy, after installation, is an inflation free source of power, which means reduced electricity cost.

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has been directed by the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL) to circulate consultative papers before bringing in any new regulation or changes in the existing ones. In a recent order, APTEL’s Chairperson Justice M Karpaga Vinayagam and Technical Member Rakesh Nath, have said that to facilitate effective participation of stakeholders and to obtain relevant comments from them regulatory commissions should circulate consultative paper through public domain.
