The Union government does not directly provide solar streetlights to the states. However, the Union government is providing a subsidy of 30 per cent of the project cost subject to a maximum of Rs 81 per watt peak for installation of solar streetlights in the General Category States in the country, said the Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah in Lok Sabha recently.

Himachal Pradesh Urban Development Minister Sudheer Sharma informed reporters that the state government would spend Rs 516 crore to augment water supply to Shimla. The state government took this project to meet the shortage of water in the city during summer. The project would ensure that Shimla does not have any problem pertaining to drinking water for the next 25 years, Sharma said.

In its recent report, Greenpeace India highlighted that over 25 percent of electricity aimed to be generated from renewable sources in 2012 was lost because 20 of the 29 states failed to meet their targets last year. India registered a deficit of 14,268 million units of electricity owing to lack of proper implementation of the set target, the environmental group said

In Himachal Pradesh, the State Cabinet has decided to withdraw licenses issued to four cement companies for setting up cement plants. In this regard, the State government has now issued notices to the companies concerned. The companies have reportedly failed to install the cement plants, within the stipulated time, despite the State given its approvals, say media reports.

Maharashtra government has levied a cess of eight paise per unit from 1st May 2008 on the sale of electricity to commercial and industrial consumers. The cess is to be used for executing schemes of generation of renewable energy. The Electricity Act 2003 and Tariff Policy 2006 provide enabling framework for renewable energy projects in the country, said the Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy, Farooq Abdullah in the Lok Sabha on May 3.

NSL Renewable Power has executed an agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for an equity investment of $30 million (Rs 162.66 crore) in the company. A part of the investment proceeds would be used for its 100 mw Tidong run-of-river hydro power project in Himachal Pradesh and the 75 mw Chilarwadi wind project in Maharashtra, NSL said.

Asian Development Bank on May 1 stated that it has made its first equity investment, to the tune of $30 million, in NSL Renewable Power for funding the company's clean energy projects. ADB plans to increase its investments in the company and also in country's renewable energy space in future.
