In Tripura, the first unit of the 363 mw combined cycle gas power plant at Palatana is all set for commercial generation from June 15. President Pranab Mukherjee will inaugurate the project on June 21 and dedicate it to the nation. With successful generation of full potential power at the plant last week, ONGC Tripura Power Company (OTPC) on May 18 announced it would be opened for commercial operations.

For undertaking home loans business in the North-Eastern part of India, Life Insurance Corporation of India Housing Finance (LIC Housing Finance) is planning to float a separate subsidiary or special purpose vehicle (SPV). The second largest standalone housing finance company of the country has hit upon this strategy as local laws in some of the North-Eastern States do not allow creation of a mortgage to convey a property as security to a lender against a loan.

Media reports indicate that Arunachal Pradesh and its neighbouring states withdrew several hydroelectric power projects from NEEPCO (North Eastern Electric Power Corporation) and gave them to private firms. Mizoram’s lone Lengpui Airport in Aizawl, the only State-owned airport in the country, would soon be in the hands of the Airport Authority of India (AAI). Saidenga, the Assistant Director of the civil aviation said that the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has, in principle, agreed to take over the Lengpui Airport from the Mizoram government.

The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the governments of Maharashtra and Odisha for setting up directorate of radiation safety (DES). This is aimed at strengthening the regulatory control of medical diagnostic X-ray facilities. AERB is India's regulatory body for enforcement of radiological safety.

North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) will be adding another 2,300 mw of power to its present capacity. This public sector utility is also planning to go public in the next three years. NEEPCO's authorised share capital is Rs 5,000 crore and its net worth as on March 2012 was Rs 4,780.01 crore.

To declare the 121 km Lakhipur-Bhanga stretch of the Barak River as a National Waterway the Union Cabinet on January 10 approved the introduction of a Bill in the Parliament. The Cabinet also gave its approval for preparation of projects/schemes for development of infrastructure facilities on this stretch of the river at an estimated cost of Rs.123 crore with implementation in two phases.
