South India has now got its first regional domestic airline Air Costa. The airline, from Andhra Pradesh, announced starting no-frills air carrier services connecting Southern cities in a month's time. Part of the Vijayawada-based construction group LEPL, Air Costa said it will launch the airline with a fleet of three E jets from Embraer suited for the regional short-haul connectivity between tier-II and tier-III cities with the major metros. Air Costa will have its maintenance based and headquarters at Vijayawada where the aircraft have already landed with major approvals in place.

General Electric Company's aviation unit is to produce 3,800 commercial aircraft engines with its partners next year, up from 3,600 units expected in 2013. Demand for new airplanes has prompted the company produce more engines. The forecast, due to be released at the Paris Air Show that starts next week, is up nearly 36 per cent from 2010. GE delivered 3,300 engines in 2012.

The Union Civil Aviation Ministry has pulled up the aviation safety regulator over delay in taking action against three flying clubs in Maharashtra caught for fudging training records in 2011. The schools under fire include the Bombay Flying Club (BFC), the country's oldest flying club. Despite several discrepancies in the club's records and heavy monetary penalty recommended against some of its officials, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) failed to implement timely action.

India is evaluating demands by various foreign airlines to enhance bilateral air traffic rights in the wake of a massive hike granted to Abu Dhabi following the Jet-Etihad deal. The Union government is planning to evaluate India's international passenger growth and will also see how the existing bilateral rights are being used by Emirates before taking a call on their request, said Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh in London.

The 24 per cent stake sale between Jet Airways and Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has hit another roadblock. The Centre is now examining whether Naresh Goyal, Chairman, Jet Airways, who is an NRI, his share in the airline should be considered as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). If the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) decides that the NRI stake has to be counted in the 49 per cent FDI cap for investments in the civil aviation sector, the company will have to come up with a fresh proposal.

On flight duty time limitation (FDTL) of the cabin crew of Air India, the management has withdrawn some recommendations of the Dharmadhikari Committee. The Shiv Sena-affiliated Cabin Crew Association, a breakaway faction of the All India Cabin Crew Association, had threatened to strike work from June 15 if these recommendations were implemented. Following the threat, Air India management on June 11 agreed to withdraw some of the steps it had taken towards the implementation of the Dharmadhikari Committee report.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh has said that Ratan Tata will not be on the board of AirAsia India, the joint venture between the Tata Group, Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia and Arun Bhatia of Telestra Tradeplace, who is a relative of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal.
A Tata Sons spokesperson confirmed that Tata group Chairman Ratan Tata will not sit on AirAsia India board.

Kairali Airlines, an aviation company based in Kerala, is all set to launch its operations on domestic routes on November 1, the anniversary of Kerala's statehood. The company and its logo will be formally launched on June 15 in Kochi. Sajesh Ratnakar, Executive Officer of Kairali Airlines said that the airline is registered with a Chalakudy address and has received a corporate identification number.
