The Union Minister of Railways Mallikarjuna Kharge said Indian Railways as an organisation has always been seen as one of the pillars of the National Economy. During the 12th Plan, the Indian Railways is working towards creating value and improving the quality of rail services, expansion and modernisation of the rail network, improving efficiency and productivity in operations and technology upgradation and improvements.
Kharge was delivering his inaugural address at the 10th edition of International Railway Equipment Exhibition (IREE) – in New Delhi on October 3.
Indian Railways plan to add 4,000 km of new lines besides over 7,500 km of doubling and 5,500 km of gauge conversion. Further, the Railways also plan to procure over one lack wagons, 24,000 coaches and nearly 4,000 locomotives, Kharge said.
