The Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Lohegaon air field in Pune (Pune airport) is to be renovated under a contract with Tata Power's Strategic Electronic Divison (SED). After Bhatinda air base in Punjab, the IAF has taken up the air field in Pune for modernisation. The airport will be partially closed for 3 months from 10 pm to 8 am and more than 90 flights will be rescheduled during this period.
By mid-June, a team from Tata will be carrying out a survey before commencing the renovation work. The air base, among the 30 that were given to Tata Power SED in a $240 million contract in April 2011, will have improved facilities.
Under the IAF’s programme, called Modernisation of Airfield Infrastructure (MAFI), 30 air fields across the country will have the latest air traffic management systems, improved runways and runway lighting. Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) civil aviation committee chairman Surendra Kumar Jain said that the modernisation includes installation of CAT lights to increase visibility, modern instrument landing system (ILS) for safe landing during inclement weather and automatic clearance system will help landing/take-off in Pune without taking clearance from Mumbai.
