In order to solve the deficiency of power infrastructure, the Kochi Port plans to develop the infrastructure at Vallarpadam to give a fillip to the expansion programmes in the port-based special economic zones (SEZ) and Puthuvypeen.
The port trust will hand over the existing power system and also provide the land required for setting up the facilities. It secured power distribution licence in the SEZ area of Vallarpadam and Puthuvypeen as an extension to the existing licence at Willingdon Island.
The Kerala State Electricity Board had allocated only 3 mva power for the port-based SEZ, which is inadequate for the future development projects, it was felt that obtaining expressions of interest from the new stakeholders will give a significant end result.
It is estimated that the port-based SEZ will require upgraded infrastructure with the annual projected power requirement going up from 80 lakh units during 2013-14 to 134.70 lakh units in 2018.
