Tarun Kapoor, Joint Secretary in Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has said that all rooftop solar systems will soon have to be rated for quality before they are installed. This will be done for all solar products that will be used for residential rooftop installations. Companies are now rated by agencies but the products are not. The Ministry is working on deciding how this will be done," said Tarun Kapoor.
The rating agency could be something like the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, and the MNRE is working on this, Kapoor said at Renergy 2013, a renewable energy conference organised in Chennai by the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency. The demand for solar rooftop installations has also gone up significantly of late, Kapoor said.
Under the National Solar Mission, the government offers subsidies of 30 per cent on the plant for each household that sets up a rooftop solar system, and the ministry is gradually running out of funds allocated for giving these subsidies.
