Absence of safety measures lead to killing of pillion rider

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on May 27 admitted that no safety measures were planned at the Indiranagar underpass of Nashik, where a 22-year-old was killed on May 25. Pankaj Shinde of Yashaswi apartment, Tornanagar, was killed when the motorcycle he was riding pillion was knocked down by an unidentified vehicle at the recently constructed Indiranagar underpass beneath the city's iconic 5.6-km flyover on the Mumbai-Agra highway during the wee hours of Saturday.

The father of the deceased, Balasaheb, was seriously injured in the accident and is taking treatment at a private hospital. The vehicle which knocked down the motorcycle fled the scene. No safety measures were planned at the underpasses in Indiranagar and the one in front of Hotel Gateway. NHAI will, however, plan safety measures which are required to ensure that the speeds of the vehicles at the intersections are under control, said Prashant Khodaskar, project director, NHAI.
