According to industry experts, the recent Supreme Court ruling on a steel plantpromoted by Bhushan Steel may fast track allocation of iron ore mines for steel projects.
In the ruling, the apex court directed Odisha government to recommend iron ore mines to a steel plant promoted by Bhushan Steel.
The timing of the ruling is important as it has come before the mining bill is cleared. This will certainly help steel companies but once allocations are stopped, the companies will have to follow the competitive bidding route to get resources, experts opined.
The apex court's ruling is based on an agreement that Bhushan had signed with the Odisha government in 2002, where the state agreed to allot iron ore leases and recommended the company's proposal for grant of a coal block.
Projects of large steel players, including ArcelorMittal India, POSCO, JSW Group, and a number of smaller companies have not taken off owing to the government's inaction in iron ore allocation and coal supplies issues.
