In order to fast track infrastructure projects, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will cut several trees that come in the way of the Metro project and other developmental works in the city.
The civic body will either cut or prune 122 trees that line Marve Road for the road widening and concretising project, while 36 trees that surround the Metro depot in DN Nagar will share the same fate. Also, 33 trees that adorn the Marve-Charkop link road will face the axe.
BMC authorities have requested citizens objecting to the plan to voice their concerns in writing.
Expressing pessimism at the lack of concern among citizens to prevent the cutting, another official from the garden department said, there are very few citizens who want to fight for trees. Only a handful of them approach the civic body to complain or give suggestions.
The tree authority department has forwarded proposals to the concerned authorities, and after inspection the BMC commissioner will make the final decision.
