Jharkhand Government has cleared a proposal for its second Ultra Mega Power unit (UMPP) of 4,000 mw thermal plant at Husseinabad in Deoghar district. The plant will be using supercritical boiler technology for power generation.
The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) is expected to notify the allotment order next week. Once completed, the UMPP will be capable of electrifying the power-starved Santhal Pargana region. At present, electricity is available for only 12-16 hours a day there.
Earlier, Jharkhand was allotted the first UMPP at Tilaiya in 2007-2008 being constructed by Reliance Power at the cost of about Rs 20,000- crore. Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Odisha and Chhattisgarh also got UMPPs in the first phase.
The CEA has identified 33 additional sites, including Husseinabad, for setting up the UMPP. The Centre has targeted 100,000 mw capacity additions by the end of the 12th Plan.
