The Airports Authority of India's (AAI) Employees Union has requested the Union government to handover only smaller airports to private operators for their maintenance and not those big airports where the government has already made huge investments on the development of the airports and runways.
The government has recently announced its decision to hand over the AAI-run Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Jaipur and Guwahati airports to private companies despite opposition from the unions, after investing over Rs 5,000 crore of public funds for their modernisation.
Employees of Airports Authority of India (AAI), who oppose the privatisation of big airports, say that the government should ask private companies to develop smaller airports instead of giving the revenue generating big airport to the private corporates.
