Under the Urban Infrastructure and Governance (UIG) of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), Gujarat was given Rs 2,578.81 crore between 2005 and 2012, This was over 8 per cent of the total allocation of Rs 31,500 crore, said the Union Minister of State for Urban Development Deepa Dasmunshi in the Rajya Sabha recently.    

In India, Gujarat is the sixth most urbanised state with 42.58 per cent of its residents living in urban areas.    

Under urban infrastructure development scheme for small and medium towns (UIDSSMT), overall allocation for Gujarat for 2005-12 is Rs 351.82 crore, which is more than 3 per cent of the total allocation (Rs 11,400 crore), he added. Under UIDSSMT, 52 projects have been approved for various towns and cities in the state, with an approved cost of Rs 438.14 crore and additional central assistance (ACA) commitment of Rs 350.51 crore.    

The Minister said that So far, 35 projects have been reported physically complete in Gujarat, the minister said. In the transition phase, when JNNURM was extended by two years, six projects were approved for Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Surat, at an approved cost of Rs 282.16 crore and an ACA commitment of Rs 131.92 crore under the UIG sub-mission.
