Delay in land acquisition stalled the widening of Velachery Main Road between Vijaya Nagar Junction and a bridge near the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) station in Chennai. Residents' objections and litigation by a private firm have been holding up the project for months.
The project is part of the state highways department's efforts to make the entire stretch safe. As per plan, the stretch between the junction and the bridge would be converted from the four lanes to six. The stretch between Pallikaranai and East Tambaram would be converted into a four-lane road at a cost of Rs 11 crore.
