MPT loses ore traffic

Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) exported a mere 29.37 million tonne of iron ore in 2011-12, which is a 30 percent decline from40.63 million tonne exported in 2010-11.

The port, which is a prominent exporter of iron ore in the country, exports 48 percent of the country’s ore annually in normal circumstances.

Ban on transport and export of iron ore from Karnataka ports, ban on export of iron ore dumps, curbing transporting ore from mines to jetties for unloading on ships, 50 percent hike in customs duty have affected port traffic.

Goa, which is the second largest producer and largest exporter of iron ore, has exported 43 million tonne from MPT and Panaji port in 2011-12.

MPT handles 40-50 million tonne of ore annually and contributes 35 percent of state Gross Domestic Product.
