In order to provide basic amenities such as drinking water and solid waste management among others to cities and towns in the state, Tamil Nadu government adopted Rs 6,000 crore Integrated Urban Development Mission.
Tamil Nadu has recorded one of the highest urbanisation figures at around 45 per cent with the numbers projected to reach 60 per cent by 2020.
As part of the mission, the state Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa alloted Rs 750 crore for the year 2012-13. Of this, Rs 500 crore was allotted for corporations excluding Chennai and municipalities and Rs 250 crore for town panchayats.
She had announced the scheme earlier, earmarking Rs 6,654.03 crore for areas coming under different local bodies including coprorations, an official release said.
