Private companies are likely to invest Rs 4,250 crore in airports at Chennai, Lucknow, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Guwahati and Jaipur. The Union government has identified these airports for privatisation in the current financial year.    In the second phase of airport privatisation programme, private players awarded the contracts for operations, management and development of airports. They would have to make estimated investments in the range of Rs 500-1,200 crore for development and upgrade works at each of these airports.    For upgrading the Chennai and the Lucknow airports, the private concessionaire will have to invest Rs 1,200 crore and Rs 500 crore respectively. The investments at Chennai include resources required for constructing a new domestic terminal, a parallel taxi track, re-carpeting the main runway, modification of old international terminal building, connectivity of metro rail, construction of common user cargo terminal and multi-level car park.
