NTPCs maiden coal transport plan via waterways fails

Due to Kolkata port congestion and technical snag, the National Thermal Power Corporation's (NTPC) bid to transport imported coal through West Bengal's waterways has failed. It was the first such attempt. The first consignment of 2,800 tonne has been stuck in Kolkata for the past eight days due to port congestion and the consequent inability to clear the coal through customs.    Commissioner of Customs for Ports SK Das said that the barges are yet to be cleared as they haven't been able to dock because berths aren't available at Kolkata Port. Inspections will be completed as soon as the vessels find berths.    The coal is being carried on two barges and is headed for NTPC's Farakka Thermal Power Station.
