In order to ensure planned development activities along the metro rail corridor, the Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) would develop a transit-oriented development plan through a consultant.
In this regard, the authority would rope in a consultancy company for preparing a transit-oriented development plan, focusing on the metro corridor and the 22 proposed metro stations.
KMRL wants to reduce travel needs and urban sprawl and also ensure equitable distribution of development benefits across all sections of the society. These objectives could be attained by adopting transit-oriented development model. KMRL would focus on integrating all public transportation modes.
The plan attempts to decentralise urban development by providing public and private facilities centered around metro stations and the metro corridor, with the objective of and reduce travel needs and urban sprawl.
Meanwhile, KMRL set up a Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) to attain related objectives like a single ticketing system for all public transport systems.
It wants to bring all modes of transport like waterway network, taxis, autorickshaws, private and KSRTC buses under one centralised management system, whereby all the routes and timings would be harmonised with the commuters in mind.
