KEC International expects to win its first composite railway infrastructure development project in January. Primarily an EPC player engaged in laying power transmission lines worldwide, with the Government's thrust on development of railway infrastructure, KEC planned to get into the bigger business of taking up railway infrastructure projects.
These will include railway signalling projects or platform construction. Later KEC will be bidding for bigger projects such as track laying. Initially, KEC will pool in expertise in track laying and other railway infrastructure projects from local players through strategic alliances. Larsen & Toubro and IRCON are amongst the major players in this space.
Also, KEC is constructing the telecom towers at its three manufacturing units in Jabalpur, Jaipur and Nagpur — its total manufacturing capacity at present is 1.8 lakh tonne, including 70,000 tonne of contracted capacity. KEC, which at present operates in about 22 countries, has been trying to consolidate its US operations through an acquisition.
