Govt works on privatisation of airports

The government is holding discussion with officials of different ministries and the Planning Commission on privatising 15 airports in the country.

These airports, which are currently being run by Airports Authority of India (AAI), would be operated, managed and further developed by the public private partnership (PPP) players. AAI will also have some stake in these airports post privatisation.

According to the proposal, the government would initially privatise six key airports — Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow and Guwahati. Projects for these airports would be awarded under international bidding in the first phase.

But government sources assures that employees working at these airports will have job security and relevant provisions would be included in the PPP agreement.

Further, officials from the aviation ministry said the mistakes from the privatisation of Delhi and Mumbai airports would not be repeated.
