In Pune city, Pedestrians First, a citizens' group, has suggested the Pune Municipal Corporation to construct a subway for pedestrians as an alternative plan for the proposed flyover at Jedhe chowk in Swargate. The civic body has a plan which would be more pedestrian and bus-centric, and would take care of the heavy pedestrian movement in the area of the city.
The Pune Municipal Corporation has been demanded by several NGOs in Pune to get the flyover project be reviewed properly by the experts. Work is yet to start on the flyover project. The NGOs have pointed out that even basic studies mandated by the Indian Road Congress (IRC) as well as the Comprehensive Mobility Plan of Pune have not been carried out before finalising the project.
The NGOs have said that there are several unresolved design issues pertaining to the flyover project. Jedhe chowk is the busiest junction in Pune city where five main roads converge. The area has heavy pedestrian movement because of two main bus terminals - one of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation and the other of PMPML.
