With the implementation of the targeted capacity by the end of Twelfth Five Year Plan, India is likely to be self-reliant in power sector. Keeping in view the growing demand for power, 88,537 mw of fresh capacity comprising 10,897 mw Hydro, 72,340 mw thermal and 5,300 mw nuclear, is planned to be added during the Twelfth Five Year Plan Period.    DPRs of 21 hydro electric projects (up to 31.07.2013) with an aggregate installed capacity of 7,724 mw are under examination in CEA/Central Water Commission (CWC)/Geological Survey of India (GSI).    No thermal power project is pending for approval with Central Electricity Authority (CEA), since after the enactment of Electricity Act, 2003, concurrence of Central Electricity Authority (CEA) is not required for setting up of new thermal power projects.    However, concurrence of CEA is required for setting up of Hydro Projects estimated to involve capital expenditure exceeding such sum as may be fixed from time to time, by notification by the Central government.
