To resolve the impending crisis at Chennai port, traders and cargo agents in the city have sought the immediate intervention of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). Hindrances delaying transportation of goods has resulted in the port losing business.
Chennai Customs House Agents Association said that due to poor connectivity to the port, the port has lost many contracts, some of the bagged contracts cancelled.
Due to such cancellation of contracts, the outlook is bleak with two major projects within the port, worth more than 4,000 crore. The projects likely to be stalled due to the cancellation of contracts for the proposed elevated corridor from Chennai port to Maduravoyal and delays in the commissioning of the Ennore Manali Road Improvement Project.
It is said that Chennai port now handles less than 50 per cent of its capacity. The port has the capacity to handle nearly six lakh cars, but poor roads limit the volume to less than three lakh cars.
