Walmart to speed up its tech innovation in India

Walmart is evaluating more Indian vendors to parcel off back office and technology related projects. The Arkansas-based Retailing giant, which already works with Indian vendors such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro and multinationals such as IBM, Accenture, Cognizant, UST Global and SofTec, plans to broaden its technology supplier vendor base to reduce costs and speed up technology innovation, according to Wal-Mart CIO Karenann Terrell, who was speaking at the Nasscom Summit.

The company also had strategic tie-ups in India with companies such as Cognizant, Accenture, IBM, UST Global and SofTech. With increasing number of customers preferring to shop online in the US and competition coming from Amazon, Walmart is trying to catch up on the technology front and these initiatives are in line with that strategy, according to industry watchers.

This is in addition to Walmart’s existing technology operations. Last April, Walmart expanded its WalmartLabs in Bangalore and hired 100 software developers and a moved into a new facility. This is a unit of Walmart Global e-Commerce and is the company’s hub for creating platforms and products around social and mobile commerce.
