Media reports indicate that Metso Group is enhancing its capability to supply wear parts to mining and construction companies by investing about Rs 40 crore for expansion of its foundry in Ahmedabad.
The Finnish group acquired the Ahmedabad foundry, a greenfield project, in 2000 and it began operations in 2001. The foundry would meet about 50 per cent of the company's global requirement. The group has about 12 export hubs across the globe, reports indicate.
In order to raise its capacity or to strengthen its services offerings, the firm is willing to acquire companies in India and it is holding talks in this regard.
The group supplies technology and services in various sectors including mining. Currently, India is among the top 10 markets for the company and contributes eight per cent to its global sales. It expects the Indian market to double in size in the next five years.
The disruption in mining activity in Karnataka, Goa and Odisha marginally affected the business of Metso.
The Supreme Court banned mining in Karnataka in July 2011, but it was lifted partially last year and again in April this year.
Iron ore miners in Goa, which accounted for more than half of iron ore exports from India, are awaiting a verdict from the apex court for resuming operation.
