Since the vehicular traffic opened on the Mumbra bypass on Sepember 28, the bypass corridor has been left toll-free for motorists due to a pending repair on the corridor. After constant pressure from various quarters, the Public Works Department (PWD) officials opened the Panvel-bound corridor of Mumbra bypass for light vehicles and trucks on September 28.
Though the repair work on the area which saw a major landslide on July 27 is still on, the PWD removed the road-closed barrier at the Thane end of the bypass to let vehicles move along the Panvel-bound corridor.
Travel on the corridor without toll fee has come as a relief for commuters who have been forced to use alternate roads such as the Sion-Panvel highway and the Thane-Belapur road. The high volume of vehicles on those roads used to cause traffic heavy snarls.
However, the corridor contractor was against keeping the road toll-free since 80 per cent of the repair work is complete. It is expected that the contractor will collect toll once he completes the repair work at the spot that caved in on the corridor a couple of months ago.
With the opening of both corridors, the heavy traffic load on Navi Mumbai arterial roads have reduced. Once the heavy vehicles also get permission to ply on the bypass, city roads will be relieved of the extra load.
