The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) is the largest Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) handling port in India (in 2011-12), the Port has claimed. NMPT's Chairman P Tamilvanan said that the port handled 20.75 lakh tonne of LPG in 2011-12 against 19.17 lakh tonne in 2010-11. It has exceeded the quantity of LPG traffic handled by the Visakhapatnam, Kandla, Mumbai, Tuticorin, Haldia and Kochi ports.
NMPT handled 45,009 Twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) in 2011-12 as against 40,158 TEU in the previous year, an increase of 12.08 per cent. While the port handled a higher traffic in LPG, petroleum, oil and lubricant (POL) products to Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL), coal, edible oil, fertilizer, cement and timber, it handled less quantities of iron ore fines and iron pellets from Kudremukh Iron Ore Company (KIOCL).
