Experts say air connectivity to tourist spots like Kanyakumari, Rameswaram in the country will improve the growth of such tourism centres. As per a proposal of the Union Civil Aviation Ministry’s proposal, one can expect a 20-seater or a 40-seater passenger aircraft to land in a civilian airport in Kanyakumari or Rameswaram.
Along with Varanasi, Rameswaram is considered to be one of the holiest places in India to Hindus and part of the 'Char Dham' pilgrimage.
Rameswaram and Kanyakumari have huge tourism potential, but lack of air connectivity is hampering their growth, say the ministry sources. The Ministry has a proposal to connect smaller towns with larger ones in the country. Madurai is the nearest airport to Rameswaram and it is 170 km away.
Similarly, people from Kanyakumari are forced to travel 100 km to take flights from Thiruvananthapuram airport in Kerala.
