Delhi Development Authority is implementing housing projects for economically weaker sections (EWS) in phases as the urban development ministry is emphasizing budget housing in Delhi.
The authority would set up 24,040 flats in Dwarka, Narela and Rohini in the first phase. The flats are built with the special pre-fabricated technology, a first for any housing project under DDA.
The technology uses precast columns, beams, slabs and staircases; flats are assembled on site. While 11,060 houses will come up in Rohini, Narela will get 6,580. The flats in Rohini might take longer owing to a court case. They might be ready by mid-2014, media reports indicate.
The technology is common abroad and even in other Indian cities. The company has done pre-fab projects in Maharashtra. It is learnt that all housing complexes will have grocery shops, parks, community centres, chowkidar hut, parking spaces, etc. The complex will be pedestrian-friendly, with traffic movement limited to the peripheries.
Meanwhile, DDA is in the process of formulating a policy on the allotment of over 20,000 EWS low-income flats coming up in these areas.
While 2,400 flats in Sector 23 of Dwarka have been completed, over 6,500 flats in Narela are likely to be completed by the year-end.
