In addition to building world's highest altitude civilian airport close to Tibet, China is now building the world's high altitude wind farm at about 4,900 meters above sea level in Tibet. A local wind farm developer, Longyuan Power, has announced it will install 33 wind turbines in Naqu Prefecture of the Tibetan Autonomous Region. Once completed, the project will help ensure regular power supplies in Naqu, and solve the problem of transmitting electricity to the remote area, the company said.
The company said it has already set up five of the wind turbines in the area. The turbines are being supplied by the Beijing based Guodian United Power.
The move will help develop the capabilities of Chinese wind power industry, which will have to run the turbines under conditions of extremely low temperature, high wind speeds and low air density, the state media said.
