Goa state infrastructure development corporation (GSIDC) proposed to set up a new integrated solid waste management (ISWM) system at a revised cost of Rs 96.6 crore in Panaji.
It may be noted that earlier, the state government budgeted only Rs 34 crore for the solid waste management (SWM) plant, which will have a total capacity of 100 ton per day.
The project would be implemented in the jurisdiction of the Corporation of the city of Panaji (CCP) and it would get funds from the Centre under Jawaharlal Nehru national urban renewal mission (JNNURM) if the proposal is approved.
According to the earlier plan by Tetra Tech, the proposed plant would have a capacity of 50 TPD and it would be funded by the state government.
At a meeting on July 26, the state-level steering committee approved the SWM project along with five other developmental projects for the capital city. The project will be funded 80 percent by the central government, while the state government and CCP will chip in with 10 percent each.
Meanwhile, some experts feel that the people of Goa educated on solid waste management before implementing such projects. They fell that people of Goa are either ignorant of garbage segregation or not interested in practising it.
