Road Ministry receives flak from CAG for lack of monitoring

The government auditor Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India rapped the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for spending less than the grants specified. It also rebuked the Ministry its lack of monitoring and expenditure control.

The CAG, in its report tabled in the Parliament recently said that during the years 2009-12, supplementary grants were obtained in anticipation of higher expenditure, but the total expenditure was less than even the original grants.

CAG said the gap indicates the Ministry's lack of monitoring and expenditure control. The supplementary grant of Rs 156 crore, along with an original provision of Rs 1,460 crore, for the year 2009-10 remained untouched, the CAG said in its report. The total expenditure was Rs 1,304.26 crore, as per the audit report.
