Centre expresses concern over damage caused to NHs

The Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Sarvey Sathyanarayana has said recently in the Lok Sabha that National Highways (NHs) are constructed as per the standards published by Indian Roads Congress (IRC). Overweight/overloaded vehicles accelerate the damages and as such all NHs have experienced this phenomenon, the Minister said.

Transport by road being the State subject, responsibility lies with the State government. However, government has formulated and circulated policies and procedures pertaining to overweight/overloaded vehicles.

As regard expenditure on repairs, sanctions are based on allocation made. Allocation always has been less than the requirement, the Minister said.
