The Government of India plans to reduce the flow of funds through the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). This scheme will be only available to select districts. Under this scheme, around 50 million households get employment. It just cost around 0.3% of India's GDP. Most of the beneficiaries are women mainly Dalit and adivasi communities. With the cut down in the flow of funds, it is likely that the banks may suffer the most as the 243 million basic savings bank accounts opened so far up to March 2014 for the poor may become dormant to a great extent.Till March 2014, around Rs 31,200 crore had flown into these accounts through various channels.
