In Mumbai, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Indian Air Force have opposed a Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) proposal to turn the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Trombay into a no-fly zone. The AAI and Air Force have submitted that the Mumbai airport's secondary runway 14/32 will have to be shut down if the DAE proposal goes through because the BARC hills fall in its approach and take-off path.
The DAE proposal, received by the Ministry of Civil Aviation last week, comes at a time when there is a growing unease over terrorist groups' plans to target Mumbai again.
Security at Siddhivayak and Malalaxmi temples were beefed up this week after Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said the shrines were on terror groups' hit list. Confirming that the AEC wants a no-fly zone enforced over BARC, Airports Authority of India Chairman V P Aggarwal said the proposal cannot be accepted as it will cripple operations at the Mumbai airport.
