SUC asks for more autonomy for Rajasthan local bodies

The Rajasthan State Urbanisation Commission (SUC)  has pressed for more autonomy of local bodies to enable them to meet the requirements of urban peoples' requirements effectively. The state is poised to be 35 per cent urbanised by 2030, said the SUC. The Commission also pushed for revamping sewerage, drainage and sanitation facilities in Jaipur city area.

At a meeting held on July 30, the Commission gave a detailed presentation on the urbanisation scenario in Rajasthan. Major challenge for the local bodies is how they can deliver better services in the wake of rapid urbanisation, said KK Bhatnagar, Chairman, SUC. By 2030, Jaipur is expected have a population of 54 lakh while nearly 3 crore people in the state will reside in urban localities during the same period.

For planned growth the commission has been mandated for framing new policies and review of existing policies. New policies that are to be taken up by the Commission are urban development policy, land policy, transport and sanitation policy. The Commission has also tied up with PDCOR for technical assistance in framing new legislations. The Commission is expected to submit its report on state urbanisation in the next 12-14 months to the State government.
