Gujarat State Environment Impact Assessment Authority has been directed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to conduct an on-site inquiry of OPG’s proposed power plant at Bhadreshwar village in Kutch’s Mundra taluk to verify allegations and violation of the terms of environmental clearance.
NGT's direction came on last March 16 after parties opposing the 300 me coal-fired power plant by the Indian subsidiary of Britain-based OPG Power Ventures Plc filed a fresh application, alleging OPG was violating the tribunal’s earlier order and environment clearance stipulations.
Advocates of both the Machimar Adhikar Sangharsh Sangathan (MASS) and the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests had approached the tribunal. MASS is a local fisherman’s union leading protests fearing the plant would harm the environment and their livelihood.
